WHITE CHRISTMAS GOOD,
"GREEN" CHRISTMAS GREAT
For today's parents. I'm not sure which is more frustrating, assembling the 3417 piece Lego Death star that has to be put together RIGHT NOW or freeing Fairy Secret Barbie from the 30 individually tied twist ties shackling her arms, legs, and assorted body parts to the box.
For me, I have to throw in the added concern of how to responsibly dispose of all the bits and pieces of packaging that contain today's products.
Cardboard, Styrofoam, plastic windows twist ties, paper, bows, ribbons, boxes there is a wealth of recycling opportunities, but I can understand the desire to simply grab a big trash bag, throw it all in and be done with it. Here are a few tips to help take the stress out of holiday recycling.
* If your town allows, use a leaf and yard debris bag to capture the wrapping paper and boxes from Christmas morning, When the bag is full, staple it shut, and write "Recycling" on it in big block letters. Place it next to your green bin on recycling day.
*Collect stretchy shrink wrap and plastic bags for recycling at the supermarket. Bring the bags back to the market when you shop for New Year's.
* Use big person toy boxes (such as t.v or computer) as a collection spot for smaller boxes. Flatten smaller boxes to fit into the big box and set it out for recycling. If the recycling hauler doesn't pick it up bring it to RIRRC for free.
*Gather the twist ties and save them in your junk drawer or tool box for use throughout the year.
Use Styrofoam to cushion breakable ornaments or decoration. If you live in northern Rhode Island, consider bringing your Styrofoam to KWD Warehouse in North Smithfeild where they'll recycle it for free.
